The summer months can be a great time to get out in the sunshine, but they can also be a difficult time for your roof. While you’re probably thinking summer is great because you don’t have to worry about things like cleaning leaves out of the gutters, there are other issues to pay attention to, so your roof can last as long as possible.
Here are three of the main ways this very important part of your house can be affected by the sun and heat the summer brings.
1. High Levels of Humidity
During the summer the humidity levels your roof experiences can be much higher than you’ll have in the drier, winter months. Because of that, your roof is at risk of additional condensation and moisture, which can get in through damaged shingles and affect the underlayment. That can lead to leaks, and also encourage the growth of mold.
2. More Wear and Tear
All that direct sunlight beating down on your roof during the day can start to wear it out, especially if it’s already nearing the end of its lifespan. Shingles eventually dry out and start to curl when they’re exposed to too much heat for too long, which can cause them to crack and break. If your roof is getting close to needing replacement, it’s wise to do that before the height of summer.
3. Fluctuating Temperatures
The changes in temperature from hot afternoons to cool nights cause expansion and contraction of the roof. It’s called thermal shock, and it ages the shingles. It can also cause structural damage to the roof itself, over time. While you can’t do anything about the temperature, keeping your roof in good shape can reduce the impact of the fluctuations.
If you’re not sure about the age or condition of your roof, or you’re seeing some damage and need to get it checked out, working with a professional is the best option. Then you’ll know whether you need repairs made, or whether it might even be time to replace your roof with a new one before the seasons change.
